Barcelona have launched a social media campaign in support of Lionel Messi after their star player was found guilty of tax fraud.

Barcelona have launched a social media campaign in support of Lionel Messi after their star player was found guilty of tax fraud.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner and his father Jorge were issued with 21-month prison sentences by a Spanish court on Wednesday.
The pair were accused of failing to pay more than £3m to the tax authorities between 2007 and 2008, allegedly hiding money earned from image rights in overseas tax havens.

Neither Messi nor his father is likely to go to jail, though, as under Spanish law, sentences less than two years can be suspended.
After the ruling, Barcelona pledged their support to the prolific forward, and now they are encouraging fans to do the same by using the hashtag #WeAreAllLeoMessi on social media.
The Catalan club are also asking supporters to take photographs holding their hands open to signify solidarity with the footballer, who is believed to be earning more than £250,000 per week.
It's time to show our support:

"By making it clear that #WeAreAllMessi, we want Leo to know that he is not alone.

All members, supporters clubs, fans, athletes, media and everyone else are invited to participate."

Nursing graduates to besiege MoH over postings Posted

Nursing graduates to besiege MoH over postings

About one thousand nursing graduates have vowed to besiege the Health Ministry today as they protest delays in their posting.

According to them, several petitions to the ministry over the matter have not yielded any positive results.

The Vice President of the Greater Accra Nursing and Midwifery Association, Bernard Nii Tetteh speaking to Starr News said their postings have been long overdue.

Tetteh added that government must be clear with them exactly when they will be posted.

"Government has not been clear on this issue and anytime we contact them, they will tell us to give them time and we don’t know the actual month that we will be posted and it is a worry.

"We will be there [Health Ministry] for them to clarify to us the exact month that we will be posted...but we pray that our demands are met by government."

Airtel Ghana's corporate social responsibility initiative Evolve with STEM (EWS) which seeks to inspire belief and change mindset of young people towards Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics is extending its reach outside Accra as it engages pupils of the Adum Presbyterian School in Kumasi.

A team from Airtel led by Managing Director Lucy Quist and Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Hannah Agbozo brought the inspiration and thrill of Evolve with STEM to the pupils of the Adum Presbyterian School whilst on a stakeholder engagement visit to the region.

Lucy Quist encouraged the pupils to aspire for greater heights and to use “all the resources available to them to achieve their dreams”. The session also demonstrated how STEM is utilized in everyday life to demystify these subjects. As part of the interaction, the team from Airtel donated books on Science, Mathematics, English and Social Studies to the school’s library.

Making the presentation, Hannah Agbozo, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Airtel Ghana said “everyone has the potential to bring about change wherever they are and we at Airtel are committed to empowering young people to fully realize their potential. It is our hope that today’s session with our future leaders and this donation of books and reading materials will go a long way to shape the minds of the pupils of Adum Presbyterian School and its environs”.

The team from Airtel Ghana were hosted by the headmaster of the school, Mr. Steven Kwaku Owusu, resident minister, Rev. Gyamera Konadu and the Dept. Regional Manager of Presbyterian Schools in the Ashanti Region.

“We cherish this school’s affiliation with the Evolve with STEM initiative and the visit of the Managing Director of Airtel Ghana with her team to our school. The staff and pupils of this school strongly believe that the growth and development of our nation (Ghana) largely depends on the appropriate development of its human capital especially in STEM.

In this regard, we fully support the Evolve with STEM initiative and commend Airtel Ghana for embarking on this initiative. On behalf of the entire teaching body, I wish to express our profound gratitude to Airtel Ghana for choosing our school to be a beneficiary of this initiative” Mr. Steven Kwaku Owusu stated.

The initiative started on a pilot basis within Accra since its launch in December last year. The past few months have however seen the initiative make strides to reach a wider audience outside of the capital city. A team of employees led by Lucy Quist, in May, activated Evolve with STEM in schools in the Central and Brong Ahafo Regions.

All the visitations included a mentoring session, donation of books and stationery supported by the Rotary Club of Tema to complement teaching and learning efforts in the schools.

Airtel also recently launched the third phase of the initiative by setting up STEM Clubs to serve as a conduit for practical and hands on interaction with Science, ICT and Mathematics – to further boost the confidence of Club members.

Since it was launched in December 2015, Evolve with STEM has impacted the lives of over 1,000 students through inspirational talks, experiential exercises and capacity building for teachers. All these exercises have sought to demystify the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and ultimately encourage these young minds to reach for their dreams.

Supreme Court orders EC to delete NHIA registrants

Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood
The Supreme Court has directed the Electoral Commission to take immediate steps to remove persons who registered with National Health Insurance Authority cards from the voters’ register.

The five-member panel chaired by the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, in a unanimous decision on Tuesday added that the EC must give adequate notice to persons to be affected and give them the opportunity to re-register ahead of the November 7 general elections.

The Supreme Court, however, added that the challenge by the plaintiffs of the accuracy and credibility of EC's list should constitute a whole new application as the current application before them is to clarify its 5th May judgment.

Background

The apex court on May 5 2016, asked the Electoral Commission to expunge from the current voters’ register the names of all persons who registered and voted in the 2012 elections, with the NHIS card as a proof of identity.

The ruling followed a suit filed by former National Youth Organizer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan, and one, Evans Nimako, who in 2014 won a lawsuit that barred the use of NHIS cards for registration of potential voters.

The two, among other reliefs, wanted the current register declared inappropriate for the November polls.

But the EC after studying the ruling said it’s understanding did not suggest the use of any new process to delete the names of those who registered with NHIS cards, since there are already laid down procedures for expunging ineligible names.

The EC’s explanation, however, angered Mr. Ramadan who felt the Commission was disrespecting the explicit orders of the court.

He subsequently got the Supreme Court to issue the six-day ultimatum to the Commission.

The Electoral Commission last Thursday presented a list of NHIS registrants to the court but Ramadan, rejected the list describing it as “spurious.”
